Once In A Lifetime – Deardarkhead Deliver Guitar-Driven Psychedelia on New Release

OUT of Atlantic City, NJ, and formed in 1988 alt rock trio DEARDARKHEAD unveil new video from recent album The Pendulum Swings – focus track ‘In Another Life.’

The first album in a quarter of a century, The Pendulum Swings is released via the band’s own Fertile Crescent Records, recorded at Philadelphia’s Miner Street Recordings, produced, engineered and mixed by Brian McTear and Amy Morrissey, and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe Lambert.

“‘The Pendulum Swings’ is a collection of both older and newer material that we are very proud of,” said drummer Robert Weiss. “Each song has its own distinct vibe, but they collectively make up the Deardarkhead sound. This was the second time we recorded at Miner Street Recordings, and we focused on trying new things with drum loops, different time signatures, backing keyboard tracks, using an ebow and bass VI, plus more guitar tracks than ever.”

Joining Weiss in the lineup are guitarist Kevin Harrington and bassist James Malizia who replaced Brandon Howard following the recording of the album.

Shameless Tuesdays | Livre 185: Deardarkhead

Deardarkhead hit the road with a fury of a soundtrack called “The Pendulum Swings”. but also drops their DNA into this week’s Shameless Tuesdays!

For nearly 40 years, Deardarkhead has revved up a shoegazing post-punk sound with a trademark New Jersey gnarly attitude. Their latest album, The Pendulum Swings, is the exact soundtrack needed for a Hell’s Angels gang to roll down a haunting desert road, engines roaring like thunder and wheels burning on the brink of catching fire. All it needs is a pack of smokes paired with a skull & bones lighter, and the ultimate journey can commence. But before the axe can make its descent, Deardarkhead have summoned for us this week’s Shameless Tuesdays!

Here’s what Deardarkhead have to say about this week’s playlist:

“Hello, this is Rob Weiss from Deardarkhead. We are an American shoegaze, dreampop, post-punk band, that I started in 1988 and are based in the Atlantic City, New Jersey area. We are currently an all instrumental three piece and consist of: Kevin Harrington on guitar, James Malizia on bass guitar, and myself on drums. In the past we had a vocalist, but after his departure we decided to explore what we could do musically without words. We like to make atmospheric music which is melodic, dreamy and often loud, driving or psychedelic. The band takes its name from an Irish poem, “Cean Dubh Dilis” (1867 Sir Samuel Ferguson), about a beautiful girl with black hair.

We recently released a 10 song album called ‘The Pendulum Swings’, which we would love for you to hear. You can check it out on all major streaming platforms and can be purchased at: https://deardarkhead.bandcamp.com/ Without a vocalist, the guitar becomes the main melody instrument, so we spend a lot of time trying to find new ways to make the songs interesting, yet still accessible. This was a huge focus for the album and we’d like to think we pulled it off! There is something incredibly pure about creating emotion without the use of lyrics to tell the listener how they should feel.

Every band on this playlist was either a direct influence when Deardarkhead started out or shaped our sound in the early years as we were evolving. All these songs have their own unique sound, but they create an atmosphere that takes you somewhere else. This is something we’ve always aspired to. While I don’t think we sound exactly like any one of these bands, they are a huge part of our musical DNA and inspiration for starting a band all these years ago. We hope you will enjoy it!”

As I sit here listening to advance tracks from “The Pendulum Swings,” the 10-track instrumental album by longtime Atlantic City indie rock band Deardarkhead, I find myself preparing for the band’s album release party Thursday, July 16, at Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City’s revitalized Orange Loop. Naturally, I wanted to learn more about this intriguing trio, whose sound blends shoegaze, dream pop, psychedelic rock and post-punk. So, Tune In Turn On reached out to drummer Robert Weiss, whom I’ve known for years.

“‘The Pendulum Swings’ is a collection of both older and newer material that we are very proud of,” Weiss said. “Each song has its own distinct vibe, but together they make up the DDH sound. The final and title track, ‘The Pendulum Swings,’ is one of our newer songs, but emotionally and thematically it perfectly summed up everything the band has been through over the years. It felt like a statement.”

In addition to Weiss on drums, Deardarkhead features guitarist Kevin Harrington and bassist James Malizia, who joined the band after “The Pendulum Swings” was completed, replacing Brandon Howard. The group originally performed as a four-piece with vocalist Michael Amper, who departed in 2009. Since then, Deardarkhead has been an all-instrumental band.

Recorded at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia, “The Pendulum Swings” was produced, engineered and mixed by Brian McTear and Amy Morrissey, whose credits include The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile and Sharon Van Etten. Grammy-nominated engineer Joe Lambert, known for his work with Animal Collective, Blonde Redhead, Beach House, M83 and Wild Nothing, mastered the album. It will be released on the band’s own Fertile Crescent Records label.

Wondering where the band’s unusual name came from? It was inspired by Samuel Ferguson’s 1867 Irish poem, Cean Dubh Dilis.

There’s no doubt Deardarkhead is excited to debut the new album before hometown fans.

“We are beyond excited to be back at Anchor Rock Club for our record release show,” Weiss said. “We’ve got a great lineup planned.”

The evening will feature DJ Bob Portella of WLFR 91.7 FM, who has hosted Transmission Radio since 1985, spinning records throughout the night.

Also performing are The Falling Out, featuring members of several longtime Philadelphia and South Jersey bands, including The Improbables, The Justines, The Blessed Muthas, The Tone Bandits, The Flyswatters and The Midnight Beat. The group combines strong vocal harmonies with generous doses of reverb and fuzz.

Philadelphia-based Bitter Bitter Weeks, led by McTear and Morrissey, also will perform. Joined by former Improbables drummer Jeremy Grites, the band blends indie folk, avant-garde noise rock and Americana into an emotionally rich indie-rock sound.

We also asked Weiss about the current state of the independent music scene. Is it promising or prohibitive?

Deardarkhead

“The indie music scene is stronger than it’s ever been in South Jersey,” Weiss said. “There are far more bands now than when we started in 1988. Anchor Rock Club has been a huge win for Atlantic City-area indie fans, and the crowds just keep getting bigger. Other venues like The Seed Brewery, Obscura Brewing Co. and Little Water Distillery also support original music, and it’s great to see people coming out.”

Making a living as an independent musician, however, remains difficult.

“Streaming has changed the entire music industry,” Weiss said. “Bands don’t make much money selling records anymore. Most income comes from constant touring and selling merchandise. It’s possible to make it, but it’s tough, even if you get lucky. For Deardarkhead, success is about longevity and continuing to release the music we want to make.”

Deardarkhead performs with The Falling Out, Bitter Bitter Weeks, DJ Bob Portella and special guests Thursday, July 16, at Anchor Rock Club, 247 S. New York Ave., Atlantic City. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $16.35.

Deardarkhead Ushers in Bold New Era, Unveiling “Letting Go” Single

New Jersey alternative rock band Deardarkhead return with “Letting Go,” a powerful new single that introduces their forthcoming album The Pendulum Swings. Built as an instrumental anthem, the track is driven by soaring guitar leads and melodic bass hooks, reflecting themes of growth, transformation, and the courage to move beyond old patterns into new directions.

“Letting Go” unfolds like a finely aged wine finally uncorked—rich, layered, and carrying decades of craft in every note, revealing new depths with each listen. It’s an elegant but powerful statement, where Deardarkhead distill experience into something both refined and intoxicating, setting a high bar for The Pendulum Swings.

At the heart of “Letting Go” is a sense of evolution, both musically and personally. Guitarist Kevin Harrington describes it as “a song about growth… about change… letting go of old ways… taking a new direction and knowing that it’s going to be right.” Drummer Robert Weiss adds that the piece began as a piano composition by Harrington before expanding into a full-bodied arrangement. The track is further enriched by keyboardist Joe McGinty—known for his work with The Psychedelic Furs, Nada Surf, Ryan Adams, and Deborah Harry—whose contributions add depth, atmosphere, and texture.

Deardarkhead’s current lineup features Kevin Harrington on guitar, Robert Weiss on drums, and James Malizia on bass. Malizia joined the band in August 2024, taking over from Brandon Howard, who had participated in recording the album. This iteration of the group continues a long-standing evolution that began after the departure of vocalist-bassist Michael Amper in 2009. Since then, Deardarkhead have fully embraced instrumental composition, allowing melody, tone, and texture to replace traditional vocals.

Emerging from the Atlantic City, New Jersey scene in 1988, the group took its name from Samuel Ferguson’s 19th-century Irish poem “Cean Dubh Dilis,” inspired by a striking dark-haired figure, a reference that reflects their long-standing focus on atmosphere and emotional tone as much as musical direction. They blend dreamy pop, shoegaze, and ethereal guitar textures. Across almost forty years, they have established themselves as a distinctive force in alternative music, sharing stages with artists including Supergrass, The Psychedelic Furs, Everclear, Nothing, and The Lilys, and earning a reputation for deeply immersive, emotionally charged live performances.

he Pendulum Swings album marks the band’s sixth recording and second full-length album, capturing a period of renewed experimentation and refinement. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Brian McTear and Amy Morrissey—whose credits include The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, and The Dead Milkmen—the album was recorded at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia. Mastering duties were handled by Grammy-nominated engineer Joe Lambert, known for his work with Animal Collective, Blonde Redhead, Beach House, M83, Wild Nothing, and Thievery Corporation.

Spanning ten instrumental tracks, the album explores a wide emotional and sonic range. From expansive, psychedelic-leaning guitar anthems to driving post-punk rhythms and more abstract ambient passages, the record forms a cohesive yet dynamic whole. Deardarkhead continue to push their instrumental approach forward, incorporating elements such as drum loops, unconventional time signatures, ebow techniques, bass VI, and layered guitar arrangements.

Throughout their career, the band has maintained a strong independent spirit. They have released five recordings on their own Fertile Crescent Records, with additional appearances on numerous indie compilations in the United States and Japan. In 2011, Captured Tracks issued Oceanside: 1991–1993, a retrospective of their early material as part of the Shoegaze Archives series. The band later joined Saint Marie Records in 2015, releasing the critically acclaimed Strange Weather EP in 2016.

“Letting Go” is now available across major platforms.. Meanwhile, The Pendulum Swings is open for pre-order (out July 10 in multiple formats, including CD, digital, and 180-gram vinyl).
